'cause I wanna be a knitter, too - August 22, 2004—

I've been reading knitting blogs like crazy, too many to name. I have been knitting like crazy. I am officially a crazy wanna-be knitter.

Do you wanna know how this all started? It started with this cool space called Mabel's Cafe & Knittery. It's a coffee shop, it's a yarn store, it's cozy and so grandma-mixed-with-PDX-zen. I had to hang out there. I didn't knit, but that was cool, I thought, I could soak it up without needles and yarn.

It's a choice: writing or living? - August 18, 2004—

I have so many things I need to get down in this blog, but I haven't the time. I have an interesting riff on naming kids, and another on how we're wiring our babies, like it or not. I want to work on my preschool guide and talk some more about PR.

I'm going to, I promise, start a knitting and sewing blog, too. I'm so addicted and I'd love to show off my recent creation.

Crafty ladies and gents, can you take my groovy user survey? - August 10, 2004—

I've been working on a business plan for a neighbor, and I'm helping out with my typical business school product development stuff. Let me just say that the reason I'm involved is because I love this business idea, and would be the number one customer (well, maybe the number two customer, as I plan to get a substantial discount ;).

The plan will remain shrouded in mystery until after y'all fill out my user survey. ...

Of domesticity and feminism - August 9, 2004—

It's time for that most constant of mama-ly themes: how is it that I can be such a juxtaposition of career woman and housewife, nurturer and breadwinner? How is it that I can take my child to a peanut butter restaurant and immediately start churning out a competitive analysis in my brain?

Friday the hubby and I went to a play. ... I greatly enjoyed the overdrawn, hyperbolic mom character. When she went crazy, she just recited recipes from her "Modern Feminist Consumer" magazine. When all was lost, she looked through the back issues for advice.

She resonated with me, because I, too, love the magazines. I pore through Saveur, Budget Living, Parents, Martha Stewart and the rest of them for cool ideas and inspirations.

Do what you can't help - July 29, 2004—

Ever since seeing Paul Graham speak yesterday at Powell's, I've been thinking about my favorite quote from the day: "If you don't know what to do with your life, do what you can't help."

So what is it that I can't help? It's a compelling question.
